Civil War Living History Camp at the Battlefield City Park
Friday August 7th 5:30 PM - 8 PM
During the Wilson's Creek Farmers Market
5434 S. Tower Drive, Battlefield, MO. 65619
The Battle of Wilson's Creek, fought on August 10, 1861, was the second major battle of the Civil War and the first major Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River. It took place near the city of Battlefield on land that is now the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. In remembrance of this important event in Southwest Missouri history, the Wilson's Creek Farmers Market and the City of Battlefield are pleased to have the 3rd Missouri Cavalry Regiment (Dismounted) at the Battlefield City Park to portray life in a Civil War camp.
– Walk through a working Civil War infantry camp
– Witness a black powder weapons firing demonstration
– See authentic period uniforms for Union, Confederate and Missouri State Guard Troops
– Watch drills covering basic moves and weapons handling
– Experience camp life in the 1860s
– Join a re-enactment group
– Learn about Community in Conflict: The Impact of the Civil War in the Ozarks from Springfield-Greene County Library representative Brian Grubbs
– Learn more about the nearby Wilson's Creek National Battlefield from Superintendent Ted Hillmer, Jr.
– LIVE MUSIC! Civil War era music from the Sac River Trio
The 3rd Missouri Cavalry Regiment (Dismounted) re-enactment group portrays a regiment that actually existed during the Civil War. The men of this regiment were from Southwest Missouri and fought during the battle of Wilsons Creek as a mounted cavalry unit of the Missouri State Guard. After the battle, the regiment was among an entire brigade that was officially accepted into the Confederacy. Their horses were taken away to be used elsewhere, and the men were forced to fight on foot, thus "dismounted". They were absorbed into an infantry brigade, and fought throughout the remainder of the War in that manner.
For more information about the event, call (417) 881-4138 or (417) 224-0325.

Produce Now Available!
At the Wilson's Creek Farmers Market, our produce vendors have been having a slow start this season. Fresh produce is what most people associate with a farmer's market, but local produce is tied to the seasons and the weather.
Finally the produce is becoming available. Tomatoes are just now coming out. Stop by the market this Friday to stock up on fresh market items before the 4th of July!

Opening Day Was a Success!
Over 100 people came out to celebrate the opening day of the Wilson's Creek Farmers Market, despite the rain and wind and cold! Four vendors braved the weather to come out and offer heirloom tomato plants, local Kobe beef, fresh strawberries and an assortment of flowers and annuals. Battlefield resident Beau Buffington opened the market by playing the Highland Bagpipes and local session group Galloway Crossing played traditional Irish music for the crowd. Galen Chadwick of the Well-Fed Neighbor Alliance spoke on his group's research into Southwest Missouri's agricultural ability to "feed itself", past and present, and encouraged listeners to learn more on www.wellfedneighbor.com. For the kids, face painting by Brightening Artworks was a hit. Thanks to everyone for making our opening day a success!
